The Pacific American Foundation is restoring Waikalua Loko Iʻa, a traditional fishpond, combining sensors with kilo, the Native Hawaiian practice of close observation. We interviewed staff, then built a Figma prototype and a React front end that put dissolved oxygen, temperature and tank conditions in one high-contrast view usable outdoors and by K-12 students.

Three phone screens of the dashboard: a grid of tanks, and two tank detail views showing temperature, salinity, water level and dissolved oxygen.

Mobile screens: tank overview and detail views.

The team built the implementation prototype against mock JSON data, because the pond’s Sensaphone monitors were not deployed during the project. Staff feedback on usability was positive; real data streams and further testing remained to be done.
